After most have celebrated Christmas, there is Russian Christmas, and Co-ho-ho Christmas. Wait. What?! That's right! There are a number of folks in western Oregon who endeavor to gather spent Chrsitmas trees, save them from being turned into wood chips and instead place the trees in local streams where they act as structure in the stream channels. Most often these trees are placed upstream of constructed log jams where they act as great "filler" pieces. Fish can still navigate past the debris jams, but the stream is slowed and valuable spawning gravels settle out. The backed up stream flow is also more likely to reconnect with its floodplain in these locations.
Anyway, this year, I partnered with a local Eagle Scout candidate who rallied his entire boy scout troop and volunteers from the community. We worked together to collect nearly 300 Christmas trees and to place them in the West Fork of Evans Creek. The day was a huge success. And we topped it off with some ice cream.
