God's Thumb

So today was interesting.  The Statesman Journal ran an article a while back talking about fun hikes.  One of the detailed hikes was to God's Thumb on the Coast.  It was apparently an unmarked trail, but one that led to great views.  So we went for it.

Sure enough, the "trailhead" was basically a culdesac at the north end of Lincoln City with an unmarked trail winding past a few homes.  And the trail was super muddy.  But eventually the trail broke out of the salmonberries and into some grass-covered bluffs which eventually terminated at a pinnacle and cliff above the ocean.  It was pretty steep and Zoë was nervous.  Meanwhile Zephyr was a bit too adventurous.  So yeah, it wasn't as fun as we thought it would be.  But the view was legitimately amazing as is evident by all the "thumbs up" by the kids.  Not sure why they were so into doing that on this day, but whatever.

We stopped for a picnic and some pictures before hiking back.

Of course we had to visit the ocean.  Not only because we wanted to play in the sand, but because we were muddy and filthy and need to rinse off.  So we did.  We played in the water for about an hour before taking off in search of fish-and-chips.

But we weren't successful.  Turns out that in Lincoln City, your options are either fine dining or live fish.  We wanted neither.  We just wanted some fish and chips in a basket.  Bam.  Done.  There were several spots that served up food that way, but there were 45 minute waits and I said to heck with that.  So we headed home!
