Elkhorn Creek was an amazing stream; roadless except for one bridge at the very bottom. Beautiful old growth forest and clear, cold water. And then the Beachie Creek Fire happened. And the entire watershed burned at a high intensity. Yes, it's a natural process, but the immediate devastation has been significant. Because it was pretty remote and the road into it is covered with blown-over burnt snags, it took a while to get here, but we finally did. Here we are with some folks from the USFS who wanted to see some of our burn damage. Cory and I did come back a few days later to establish some bio-physical monitoring transects to set the "baseline" for Elkhorn Creek since it's been pretty much reset.
