This past winter, there was a significant ice storm and it is suspected that it had something to do with the initiation of a landslide above Greenleaf Creek; either the ice knocked over a tree or trees and the displaced rootwads started a slide or the water and ice got into some cracks in the fragmented and exposed bedrock which spalled off and started a slide. Regardless, the landslide started just above an existing road and tore down the hillside all the way to Greenleaf Creek at the bottom of the hill. The debris crossed the river and deposited on the far stream bank. There's actually quite a lot of great structure and debris in the stream channel now which should aid in long-term restoration plans slated for the creek.
Regardless, the site provided a backdrop for a trip that I arranged with soil scientists from a couple Field Offices who each had comments and questions about the work I'm doing to amend the Resource Management Plan we all work under. It was an exhausting day of them talking at me and demanding answers, but for all their comments and questions, despite their dissatisfaction and frustration, they didn't have anything better than what I had already offered and put together for my analysis.
